At the end of the day that I scrubbed in with Dr. Quatela, I went on rounds to see the patients with Dr. Kolstad, Dr. Quatela´s new fellow, and Dr. Quatela. Some of the kids got nervous for their drains to be taken out which was sad to see, but they are all just a bit pain sensitive a few days after their surgeries which is expected. Despite having major surgery just hours or a day ago, these kids and their parents have incredible attitudes!
On our last day at the hospital, I went around to all of the kids in post-op and had them sign a few scrub shirts. We are going to auction one off at our annual HUGS gala and gave another to one of our sponsors as a thank you. The kids got very excited to be doing a different activity, and it was very cute to see them write their entire name. In most Spanish speaking countries, they have their first and middle name like we do, then additionally they have two family names from their mother and father.
Dr. Quatela, Dr. Cheney, and a few more team members stayed in Antigua for a bit longer to give a final check up on the patients. They wanted to make sure everything was looking good before the patients, and the doctors, made their long journey home.
